In today’s “Organizational One-Stop,” the JetHawks and Drive pulled off late comebacks while a late surge by the Sea Dogs was not enough in their oft-delayed season opener. The PawSox, meanwhile, barely avoided being no-hit thanks to Chad Spann. Here’s the recap:
RED SOX: IDLE
The Sox were off Monday. Josh Beckett is scheduled to start today’s home opener against the Mariners at 2:05 p.m.
DURHAM 5, PAWSOX 0
A trio of Durham pitchers limited the PawSox to just one hit—Chad Spann’s single with two outs in the eighth inning—and recorded 11 strikeouts as the Bulls, the Triple-A affiliate of the Devil Rays, blanked the PawSox in an International League game in Durham, NC. In addition to recording the PawSox’ only hit, Spann was the only player the Bulls failed to strike out at least once. Abe Alvarez, making his first start since last July, suffered the loss as he allowed five runs on four hits and three walks while striking out five in five innings. Bryan Corey struck out four in two innings of relief. Kason Gabbard is scheduled to make his second start of the season tonight at 7 p.m.
NEW BRITAIN 8, SEA DOGS 6
The fifth time was the charm for the Sea Dogs, who finally played their season opener after four snowouts, but New Britain staved off a late comeback to win the Eastern League game in Portland, ME. New Britain, the Double-A affiliate of the Twins, scored three runs in the third and four in the sixth before the Rock Cats made things interesting with five runs over the final three innings. But Andrew Pinckney lined out with the bases loaded to end the eighth and the Sea Dogs went down in order in the ninth. Jacoby Ellsbury went 4-for-6 and tied a team record with three doubles while David Bacani hit a two-run homer. Dusty Brown had two RBI and Bacani, Cory Keylor and Jed Lowrie all had two hits each. Tommy Hottovy took the loss for the Sea Dogs by allowing three runs on three hits and two walks while striking out three in five innings. Scott Shoemaker was tagged for all four runs in the sixth (three earned) on five hits. Clay Buchholz, Diehard’s top-ranked prospect, is scheduled to make his Double-A debut tonight as the Sea Dogs again host New Britain at 6 p.m.
JETHAWKS 11, LAKE ELSINORE 10
Iggy Suarez’ one-out single in the bottom of the ninth scored Luis Soto capped an impressive comeback by the JetHawks, who pounded out 15 hits—including eight doubles—and scored four runs in the final two innings to edge Lake Elsinore, the Single-A affiliate of the Padres, in a California League game in Lancaster, CA. Suarez had two hits and three RBI while Johnson had three hits, including two doubles. Ryan Khoury and Tony Granadillo also doubled twice while Soto and Aaron Bates all had two hits each. Bubba Bell, who homered five times in his previous three games, didn’t go deep Monday but had a double and three RBI. Lake Elsinore scored 10 runs in the first five innings but Tim Cox and winning pitcher Ismael Casillas blanked the Storm on just two hits the rest of the way. Casillas allowed one hit and three walks while striking out one in three innings. Starter Mike Rozier was tagged for seven runs on nine hits and one walk while striking out one in three innings. The JetHawks are scheduled to send Michael Bowden to the mound for tonight’s 6:30 p.m. game against Lake Elsinore.
DRIVE 6, COLUMBUS 5
The Drive scored three runs in the fifth and one apiece in the sixth and seventh to complete a comeback from a four-run deficit in its home opener and edge Columbus in a South Atlantic League game in Greenville, SC. Every starter had at least one hit for the Drive, who scored more runs Monday than it had in the first four games combined (four). Zak Farkes had two hits, including the game-winning RBI single in the seventh, while Kris Negron, Carlos Fernandez-Oliva and Argenis Diaz also had two hits each. Miguel Socolovich earned the win for the Drive after allowing one run on four hits and no walks while striking out three in four innings. Josh Papelbon allowed a pair of singles to start the ninth but worked out of the jam to record the save. Starter Jordan Craft allowed four runs on three hits and four walks while striking out three in three innings. The win was the first for manager Gabe Kapler. Rehabbing southpaw Jon Lester is scheduled to take the mound tonight for the Drive, which hosts Columbus again at 7:05 p.m.
