Organizational One-Stop: 4/12/08

Red Sox affiliates, which went 7-0 Wednesday and Thursday, suffered through an imperfect day Friday as the PawSox, Sea Dogs and JetHawks all lost. The Drive, meanwhile, had its game rained out. Here’s the recap:

Red Sox: A year to the day after they were nearly no-hit by the Mariners’ Felix Hernandez, the Sox were stymied by Chien-Ming Wang, who allowed only two hits in a masterful complete game performance to lead the Yankees to a 4-1 win in front of another sellout crowd of 37,624 at Fenway Park. Wang opened with five no-hit innings before J.D. Drew—who broke up Hernandez’ no-hit bid with an eighth-inning single last year—homered just beyond the glove of Bobby Abreu, who appeared to mis-time his reach for the ball. The only other hit off Wang was a bunt single by Coco Crisp with two outs in the ninth. Wang walked none and struck out three in throwing just 93 pitches, 61 for strikes. Mike Timlin, who came off the disabled list prior to the game, suffered the loss in his season debut after he gave up two runs on two hits—including a solo homer by Jason Giambi—in one-third of an inning. Timlin relieved Clay Buchholz, who made his first start at Fenway since his no-hitter against the Orioles Sept. 1 and allowed one run on four hits and three walks while striking out three in six innings. The Sox and Yankees continue the three-game series today, when Josh Beckett makes his second start of the year.

Triple-A Pawtucket: Devern Hansack failed to get out of the first inning as Louisville scored five runs in the first and another in the second on its way to an 8-5 win in front of 9,428 in Louisville, KY. Hansack was charged with three runs on three hits and one walk in just two-thirds of an inning. He’s allowed seven runs in just 4 2/3 innings in two starts this year. Edgar Martinez (three runs on five hits and one walk in 3 1/3 innings) and Dan Kolb (two runs on four hits with two strikeouts in two innings) also labored in relief before Craig Hansen and Lee Gronkiewicz combined to throw shutout ball over the last two frames. The PawSox, who had a four-game winning streak snapped, made things interesting thanks to a three-run homer by Dusty Brown in the second and a solo homer by Bobby Kielty in the fifth. Jeff Bailey also had a sacrifice fly in the fifth. Brown and Brandon Moss had two hits each. The PawSox resume a four-game series against Louisville today, when Michael Tejera takes the mound.

Double-A Portland: The Sea Dogs scored just one run for the third straight game as they dropped their home opener to New Hampshire, 3-1, in front of 5,358 at Hadlock Field in Portland, ME. Jeff Natale was 2-for-4 and, for the second straight game, had the only RBI for the Sea Dogs. Michael Bowden took the loss after he allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits and two walks while striking out four in 4 1/3 innings. Chad Rhoades (1 2/3 innings), Mike James (one inning) and Jose Vaquedano (two innings) combined for 4 2/3 shutout innings of relief. Vaquedano has yet to allow a run in 7 1/3 innings over four appearances. The Sea Dogs continue a four-game series today, when Kris Johnson is scheduled to pitch against New Hampshire.

Single-A Lancaster: The JetHawks gave up 10 runs for the first time this season as Lake Elsinore rode three three-run innings to a 10-6 win in front of 2,182 in Lancaster, CA. Chris Jones took the loss as he was hammered for four runs on nine hits with no walks and three strikeouts in 3 1/3 innings. T.J. Large, the third of four JetHawks pitchers, allowed one hit and one walk and struck out one in two innings of relief. Jorge Jimenez went 3-for-4—his fifth multi-hit game in eight starts—with an RBI while Dennis Blackmon finished 3-for-3 with two RBI. Daniel Nava had two hits while Lars Anderson hit a solo homer. Reid Engel’s seven-game hitting streak came to a halt as he went 0-for-5. The JetHawks play Lake Elsinore again tonight, when Jaymie Russ takes the mound.

Single-A Greenville: The Drive’s series opener against West Virginia was postponed due to rain in Charleston, WV and rescheduled as part of a doubleheader tonight. Felix Doubrount is scheduled to start game one for the Drive.
