The Red Sox signed RHP Matt Miller and INF Junior Spivey to minor league contracts earlier this week. Both will report to the minor league camp.

Miller, 36, was 0-1, 2.89 in 38 games with Triple-A Buffalo and worked a scoreless inning in two appearances with Cleveland in 2007. He is 6-1, 2.72 with two saves in 100 career major league games with the Rockies (2003) and Indians (2004-07) but has battled forearm and elbow woes the last there seasons.

Spivey, a former All-Star with the Diamondbacks who spent most of last year with the independent Bridgeport Bluefish of the Atlantic League, batted .241 with two homers and 14 RBI in 25 games with Triple-A Pawtucket after singing with the Boston organization on August 4. He is a career .270 hitter with 48 homers and 201 RBI in 457 games with the Diamondbacks (2001-03), Brewers (2004-05), and Nationals (2006).

Sox add minor league coaches: The Sox announced Wednesday they have appointed Chuck Smith as pitching coach at Single-A Lancaster of the California League and Tom Goodwin as a coach at short-season Single-A Lowell of the New York-Penn League. It will be the first professional coaching assignment for both.

Smith pitched professionally from 1991-2005 in the Astros, White Sox, Rangers, Marlins, Rockies, Braves and Orioles systems. He made his major league debut with the Marlins as a 30-year-old in 1999 and went 11-11 with a 3.84 ERA in 34 starts with the Marlins in 2000-01 in his lone major league action.

Goodwin had a .268 average with 24 homers, 284 RBI, and 369 stolen bases in 1288 games in his major league career with the Dodgers (1991-93; 2000-01), Royals (1994-97), Rangers (1997-99), Rockies (2000), Giants (2002) and Cubs (2003-04). He recorded 50 or more stolen bases in four different seasons with a high of 66 with Kansas City in 1996. Goodwin managed the independent Lewiston Lizards of the Continental Baseball League last year.

Scout Hank Carnaroli dies: Sox associate scout Hank Carnaroli passed away on Tuesday in New London, CT. Carnaroli had served as an associate scout to Northeast Regional Scout Ray Fagnant since 1993.

Equipment truck ready to roll: One of Boston’s favorite annual rites of impending spring occurs Saturday when the Sox equipment truck departs for the 1,480-mile trip to the club’s spring training headquarters in Ft. Myers, FL at approximately 10 a.m.

The truck will depart from Fenway Park on Yawkey Way adjacent to Gate D. Following the truck will be Fenway Ambassadors, Sox staff and Wally the Green Monster, all of whom will be tossing gifts to fans from a flat-bed truck.
