Holm Powers 'Caps to Win (5/8 Recaps)

Jeff Holm hit a two-run home run on Wednesday.

A two-run homer off the bat of Jeff Holm was all West Michigan needed to top Bowling Green in Wednesday's season opener as Jordan John and the bullpen shut out the Hot Rods. Lakeland also earned a win on Jason Krizan's walk off triple. Akron ended Erie's winning streak and Toledo fell against Rochester.

Toledo's bats struggled a day after its 16 inning game against Rochester as the Mud Hens were shutout by the Red Wings 3-0 on Wednesday. Starting pitcher Ramon Garcia's record dropped to 0-3 in the loss after the pitcher gave up two earned runs on four hits in six innings of work. Toledo was unable to hit for anything more than a single in the loss. Jordan Lennerton went 1-for-3 with a walk and a strikeout.

Erie's seven-game winning streak came to an end on Wednesday after the SeaWolves were unable to get much done offensively, falling to Akron 4-2. Patrick Cooper earned his third loss of the season in the start, giving up three earned runs on eight hits in five innings on the mound. Zach Maggard carried the weight for Erie offensively, going 1-for-4 while driving in both of the team's runs in the loss.

High-A Lakeland Flying Tigers
12-19, 6th in North Division

Lakeland carried a 2-2 tie into the bottom of the ninth inning against Jupiter on Wednesday before Jason Krizan hit a walk off triple to win the game for the Flying Tigers, topping the Hammerheads 3-2. Krizan went 2-for-3 with a triple and two runs driven in in the win. Mike Hernandez also drove in a run on a 2-for-4 night at the plate. Starting pitcher Drew VerHagen took a no decision in the win after shutting out the Hammerheads and giving up five hits over 6 ? innings. Reliever Melvin Mercedes earned his second win of the season.

14-16, 4th in Eastern Division

West Michigan scored two runs in the first inning of Wednesday's series opener against Bowling Green and needed no other run support as the Whitecaps topped the Hot Rods 2-0. Jordan John had a great start on the mound in picking up his first win of the season, shutting out Bowling Green over 6 ? innings while giving up six hits and striking out four. Jose Valdez earned his sixth save of the season in the win. Jeff Holm gave the ‘Caps all the hitting they needed, going 1-for-4 while scoring both of the team's runs on a first-inning home run.
